Owner/Operator

Hello, my name is Maria Elena Millings. I am the owner/teacher at The Discovery Den Daycare. I was born in Sheboygan Wisconsin and raised in Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico. It was there that I finished my High School. Shortly thereafter, in 1990, I moved to the United States. It was here that I began my studies, taking English classes, at Santa Barbara City College. I moved to Oxnard in 1993, where I continued my education in Early Childhood Education at Oxnard City College. In 1997 I transfer to California State University of Northridge in which I obtain a BA in Child Development. I have a Master Teacher Credential and a Site Supervisor Credential from the State of California. I am currently studying at Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena, CA to obtain my MS in Human Development with and emphasis on Leadership in Education.

I have been working with children since 1995 in different organization such as; Santa Barbara Unified School District, Oxnard College Child care center, Child Development Inc, Child Development Resources of Ventura County and Interface as a Family Advocate to End Domestic and Sexual Violence.

Some of my volunteer work includes working with different non-profit organization such as; Casa Pacifica working with children of high risk. The Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual violence in which I am also certified as a Crisis Intervention advocate. There I volunteer in different areas such as Crisis Counselor, interaction with children in shelters through play and other child development activities, bilingual services, and auxiliary participating in special events, fundraising and public relation work. One personal major event in my life was the 2002 Rock 'N' Roll Marathon in which I participate, ran and raised $1,800 for children of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

My husband Matthew and my two girls Nicole, age 25, and Madison 13 years are 100% supportive of all the events of my career and my life. Because of their support and understanding my family are the number one reason that motivates me to continue doing what I love... TO TEACH!!

I believe that children are the future of this world. We need inspired, lovable and passionate teachers that understand the needs of the community and want to make a difference in a children's life. I will continue growing as a teacher, parent, and as friend, and I will always strive for excellence for my students and for my community.
